Music Game Wars Heat Up — What Will Rock Band 2 Do?

Rock Band redefined the music-game genre. But how are the rock stars at Harmonix going to keep their edge when everybody else’s game has a drum set, too?

If you want to rock out with a full band, Rock Band is currently your only choice, as it features lead guitar, bass, drums and vocals. But later this year, the new Guitar Hero World Tour (above) will add those extra instruments, bringing the game up to speed with Harmonix’s innovative hit. Activision is also adding an in-game music creation tool to an upcoming version of Guitar Hero so players can compose and share their own songs.

And Konami, which originated the guitar-and-drums genre many years ago in Japan, is bringing out an American game this Christmas called Rock Revolution.

Full-band music games, with their absurdly large outfits of plastic instruments, are about to go from a novelty to a very crowded genre. Where consumers will ultimately put their money is anyone’s guess.

MTV Games’ Rock Band, developed by the team at Harmonix that originally created Guitar Hero, was released alongside Activision’s Guitar Hero III last Christmas.

While Guitar Hero III has outsold Rock Band, there’s no denying that MTV has made huge inroads, especially since it split up the $170 all-in-one package into separate parts. Month on month, Rock Band for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 rack up higher sales than Guitar Hero.

So it’s clear that Activision’s hand had been forced: No serious person doubted that the next iteration of Guitar Hero would contain drums and vocals. But with Thursday’s announcement of Guitar Hero World Tour, Activision is attempting to turn up the heat just a bit by adding an extra drum pad and raising the "cymbal" pads off the main body, to create what it says is a more realistic experience (right).

As more expensive, bulkier music peripherals hit the marketplace, the likelihood that players will want to add them to their collection goes down. Guitar Hero World Tour will not be compatible with Rock Band instruments: Activision has said time and again that only its official controllers will work with its games. So Rock Band owners would have to add another drum set to their living rooms if they wanted to play World Tour.

From what we’ve seen of Rock Revolution (above), neither Activision nor MTV has anything to fear from Konami. Rock Revolution does indeed sport the genre’s most complex drum controller (right): It’s got six pads on the top, plus a kick pedal.

Of the three drum sets, however, it’s likely to be the least enjoyable to play. The pads are tiny, the layout is confusing, and the whole thing feels cheap and toylike.

But it’s not just that. Konami’s game won’t feature vocals. The graphics are dated, and the on-screen presentation is plain. And as Guitar Hero and Rock Band move toward authenticity by using predominantly original master tracks, Rock Revolution’s song list is mostly covers.

It doesn’t much matter that Konami created Guitar Freaks and Drummania, the Japan-only arcade games that were directly responsible for Guitar Hero’s birth many years later. The company is clearly hoping to sell a cheaper game and coast off the popularity of music games — not climb to the top of the genre.

Ultimately, Harmonix’s strategy with Rock Band is to build a platform: It wants to sell users the hardware, then continually get more cash out of them for downloadable tracks and new discs. While it will release what I’ve heard insiders refer to as "version 2.0 instruments" with tweaks and new features for Rock Band 2 this holiday season, Harmonix is almost definitely not going to make any change that renders the current instruments incompatible with the new songs.

But that isn’t to say that the company doesn’t have the chance to come out on top of Activision. Although Guitar Hero World Tour will feature a music-creation mode that lets players come up with their own tracks and trade them online, who’s to say that Harmonix hasn’t been readying a similar feature for the next Rock Band?

In fact, we talked about just these kinds of possibilities when I visited Harmonix for Wired magazine last year. At the time, CEO Alex Rigopulos called music creation "really fertile territory for major areas of exploration in Rock Band 2."

"For the most part, what we focused on in (Guitar Hero and Rock Band) was the performance aspect, the reproduction aspect of a live performance," he said at the time. "It’s not a personally expressive element of music-making. That’s something we have always wanted to come back to. The moment that we gave up on it as a major feature of Rock Band 1, we didn’t want to give up on it completely.

"It’s sort of a no-brainer," he said. "Just free-form banging on the drums is something that people wanted to do."

Harmonix could also one-up Activision by letting players add vocals to their custom-made tracks, which Guitar Hero World Tour won’t allow them to do. Although Activision told Game Informer magazine that "copyright concerns" prevented it from doing this, Penny Arcade’s Jerry Holkins rightly pointed out this week that the same concerns would apply to the instrumental parts, so the excuse doesn’t quite wash. If Harmonix did let players create and share their own vocals, that would be significant.

Electronic Arts and MTV have yet to pull the veil off this year’s edition of Rock Band — indeed, it hasn’t even been officially announced yet. But all eyes will be on Harmonix at E3 to see if it can hold on to the business it helped create.

UCLA center presents World Festival of Sacred Music–LA in September

For 16 days in September, the 2008 World Festival of Sacred Music–Los Angeles will present nearly a thousand artists performing in 41 sacred events of music and movement throughout Los Angeles, crossing neighborhoods and cultural, religious and ideological boundaries in the spirit of peace.

The fourth WFSM–LA will fill the city's historic landmark theaters, churches, temples and outdoor spaces with renowned international and local artists expressing many diverse forms of musical creativity, from grass-roots folk music to jazz and formal European and Asian classical traditions.

Occurring once every three years, the WFSM–LA has become a global music destination since its inception in 1999, following a call from the Dalai Lama to mark the millennium with a message of peace, cultural understanding and spirituality. The goal was to present the festival on four continents.

Building on the success of the "Americas" festival in 1999 the Los Angeles organizing partners — the UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance, the EarthWays Foundation and the Foundation for World Arts — committed to the creation of a new festival in 2002 and every three years thereafter. In 1999, 2002 and 2005, this noncommercial, community-oriented, citywide festival had a combined estimated attendance of 120,000.

"Through music, each person in the audience can expand their definition of who they are as members of this city and go beyond the familiar, exploring the potential of intercultural and interfaith collaboration," said festival director Judy Mitoma, a UCLA professor of world arts and cultures and director of the UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance. "Our goal is for the events to invite seemingly unconventional partnerships between professional artists and community performers and between traditional and experimental artists to encourage community building that transcends borders."

Mitoma added: "We are continually trying to build performances that encourage collaboration between artists who normally work independently. We seek to highlight artists from around the world, as well as provide meaningful contexts for local artists who work tirelessly in our own city."

The 2008 WFSM–LA will open with a gala concert on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at UCLA's Royce Hall featuring a spectacular lineup of international and local artists, including Chirgilchin, Master Throat Singers from Tuva (near Mongolia); Rupayan, an eight-member Sufi and Qawwali folk music ensemble from the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, India; Waldemar Bastos, the great voice of contemporary Angola, who lives in exile in Portugal and combines Afropop, Portuguese fado and Brazilian influences; Emiko Susilo performing Javanese songs with American jazz guitarist Rob Levit; and the Lian Ensemble performing classical Persian music.

Concerts on Sunday, Sept. 14, will include one at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena with music by Karjam Saeji, the son of nomadic yak herders in eastern Tibet, and another at Temple Kol Tikvah in Woodland Hills featuring cellist Michael Fitzpatrick.

Other concerts will feature vocalist Vanessa Paloma exploring the common ground of Arab and Jewish culture on Monday, Sept. 15, at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre in Los Angeles; A. J. Racy and the Mystical Legacies Ensemble on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles; mystical Kurdish music by Heyraneh on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Earth and Sky Lodge in Los Angeles; Sephardic music from Stephani Valadez on Thursday, Sept. 18, at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles; Mediterranean music by Greek-born vocalist Savina Yannatou on Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles; and Sufi music from Turkey and Pakistan by Oscar-winning Israeli composer Yuval Ron and his ensemble of Jewish, Christian and Arab musicians on Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Dance performances will include classical Cambodian dance by the Khmer Arts Academy on Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach; South Indian classical dance by Mythili Prakash on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles; and Butoh artist Oguri on Friday, Sept. 19, at the Aratani/Japan America Theater in Los Angeles.

Choral music will take center stage when three of Los Angeles' best chorales come together for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, offering a varied repertoire of sacred music from Europe (Zhena Folk Chorus, performing a cappella), Asia (Philippine Chamber Singers) and the United States (Cappella Gloriana ensemble).

On Sunday, Sept. 21, events include the Los Angeles Electric 8, a group of classically trained young guitarists, which will perform works by Mendelssohn and chorales by Bach and others at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena; the Los Angeles Public Library's ALOUD series' presentation of the Shakers n' Bakers, a New York-based ensemble that performs reinterpretations of Shaker "vision" songs; and the First A.M.E. Church of Los Angeles' presentation of a performance by the Brookinaires Gospel Choir.

On Friday, Sept. 26, at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, the avant-garde String Theory ensemble will transform the outdoor courtyard amphitheater into a giant, playable musical instrument to make an astonishing blend of music and dance. Also on Sept. 26, Lesa Terry and the Women's Jazz Orchestra will offer a unique interpretation of symphonic and vocal sacred music at the First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, West African kora musician Prince Diabaté, who descends from the ancestral line of Guinean griots, and Suzanne Teng & Mystic Journey will perform at the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park. Also on Sept. 27, Italian saxophonist and vocalist Enzo Avitabile will perform at the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

The 2008 WFSM–LA will conclude with a free ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 3 p.m. to sunset on the beach south of the Santa Monica Pier. This event will feature 300 artists who will present sacred traditions from six world cultures. Among the artists scheduled to perform are Banda Juvenil Solaga from Oaxaca, Mexico, and the Pasadena Scottish Pipes and Drums Ensemble. One hundred dancers from several halaus in Los Angeles will chant and dance on the sands in reverence of Kanaloa, the Hawaiian deity of the ocean. Swing Brazil with Viver Brasil will lead a celebration of Yemanja, the Afro-Brazilian sea goddess.

There will also be drummers and dancers from Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Ghana, who will be led by Dafra, a dance and drumming ensemble from the Mandingue tradition of West Africa. The traditional canoe of the Tongva (Ti'at Society) will be paddled beyond the breakwaters, carrying offerings to the sea and sacred blessings to the four corners of the Earth, guided by the explosive rhythms of the Agape Choir and a large community drum circle led by Christine Stevens of REMO Drums.

Four Days of Great Music and Unforgettable Fun at Craven Country Jamboree

Running in the beginning of July is one of the biggest music festivals in Canada. Craven Country Jamboree 2008 is over, but next year’s show is already in full swing. With some of the biggest names in country music in one of the friendliest places in the Canadian Prairies, it’s no wonder people travel here from all over the world.

Located at Craven, Saskatchewan in the beautiful Qu’Appelle valley, the World’s Greatest Country Music Festival is a short drive from Regina. Their show has hosted some of the world’s biggest music stars on their stage throughout their 25-year history. Reba McEntire, Roy Orbison, Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and the list goes on and on.

Besides an amazing lineup the show also includes a wide variety of activities. You can hang out in the beer gardens and listen to the tunes. There are Pro Bull Riding events, beach parties, a 50/50 lottery, and cowboy church. The surrounding communities also hold many different events and sales throughout the show.

So where do you lay your head while you’re here? Right here, of course! The grounds includes open group camping where you find yourself a spot and set up camp. Reserved camp sites are available as well away from the crowds, but you might want to book those early. The general camping area is $40 for their 2009 show and reserved areas range from $75-$100.

The 2008 Jamboree had sold out all 23 500 tickets before the show had even started. The music linup included the talents of Sara Evans, Mark Chesnutt, Paul Brandt, Toby Keith, Sawyer Brown, and many more. Tickets are already on sale for the 2009 festival. Prices range from $139 - $179 for the entire show and there are only 21 000 available.

If you are looking to include an unforgettable event in your travel plans next summer, you should definitely consider this event! If great music and a fun time isn’t enough, there are so many more things to do. Regina has a natural history and science museum as well as a host of other attractions and services. Until then…
